Volunteer Monthly Newsletter
Issue 32 May

Message from the Volunteer Coordinator:
Spring is finally here!  I would like to thank everyone who attended the National Volunteer Month celebrations - they were a huge success.  Please check the announcements section for upcoming fairs and festivals; we need help with parades and setup of displays.
2008 In-Services:
In May, I will be sending out the first mail in-service.  The May topic is grief.  Remember you must sign and return the in-service in the self-addressed stamped envelope.  The in-service schedule is as follows:  May:  Grief and Funeral Home Tour; July:  Defensive Driving; September:  Infection Control; and December:  OSHA/HIPPA.

Funeral Home Tour and In-Service - Barbour County:
All Barbour County volunteers are invited to our annual funeral home tour and in-service at Wright's Funeral Home in Philippi.  Due to the unique nature of this in-service, we have to schedule two different dates to ensure there will not be any scheduling conflicts with funeral services.  I will be calling everyone two days before the event to let them know of the official date and time.  Tentative date:  May 1 at 3:00 p.m.  Please call and let me know if you plan to attend.

Awareness 1,000:  Information Packets - All Counties:
Awareness 1,000 is a word-of-mouth campaign.  I personally challenge you to tell at least five people about your hospice volunteer experience.  This campaign started in each county in March.  The Awareness 1,000 campaign sign is on display in the yard of the Elkins office.  The campaign kicked off on March 17 and wraps up on May 3.

Fundraising Events:  Barbour County:
Silent Auction and Cake Walk:  May 9 at the Junior Community Building, 6:00-8:00 p.m.

New Service Area:
In March 2008, we received official approval for the certificate of need in Mineral County. Mountain Hospice is now authorized to provide hospice services to the residents of Mineral County.  We are currently recruiting for volunteers and volunteer chaplains in this county.

Announcements:
Volunteers who are past due on TB Tests will continue to receive monthly reminders.  Remember if your TB test is past due, you will not be able to visit patients.  A number of volunteers stated they had the TB tests via their food handler's card.  This is fine, but I must receive a copy of the food handler's card; copies can be faxed to:  ATTN:  Tia at 304-823-3926.  TB reminders will be sent in May.
TB reminders will be sent out three months in advance of your yearly due date.  Mark your calendars and call the office to ensure we have an ample supply of vaccine.
The fair and festival season is here.  We need help with the parades and setup of displays.  If you are available to help, please contact Shannon Gear.  The fair and festival schedule follows:
June 3-6 Hick Festival (Tucker County)
June 7 Tucker County Health Fair at Canaan Valley Resort
June 14 Philippi Chili Cook off
June 20 Camp Good Grief (Randolph County YMCA)
June 21 Coalton Days (Randolph County) and Randolph County Relay for Life
