What is Grief?
Grief is a healthy, human response to situations such as death of a loved one, separation or divorce, loss of a job, injury, or disability. It is a natural reaction to any important change or loss. The greatest loss we experience is when a loved one dies. Grief is a painful experience, but the pain does subside.
Why should we understand grief?
Everyone experiences loss or change at some time in life. Understanding grief can help you to face the reality and deal with feelings of fear, loneliness, despair, and helplessness. Understanding grief can help you to recover and grow to be a stronger person. Accepting your loss can help you to live a happy, full life again.
What feelings do grieving people share?
Shock and denial - Your first reaction may be to deny your loss or to feel emotionally numb. Eventually, you'll be able to face the reality of your loss.
Anger - Your loss may seem unfair. You may feel angry with yourself and others for not preventing the loss, but you can work through your anger.
Guilt - It's not unusual to blame yourself for something you did or didn't do prior to your loss.
Depression - You may feel drained and unable to perform even routine tasks. Eventually, you will become involved in life again.
Loneliness - Increased responsibilities and changes in your life can make you feel lonely and afraid. As you meet new challenges and develop new friendships, these feelings will fade.
Hope - You will reach a stage where you can focus on your future filled with hope.
How can you live with loss?
Express your feelings, holding painful feelings inside can create more problems. Accepting help can provide you support and comfort. Try to get plenty of rest and try to stay as healthy as possible. If physical or emotional symptoms increase, see your physician.
